Consultation

Equine reproduction doesn’t always go according to plan, and sometimes you simply need an experienced person to help determine the next step. Top Tier offers individualized consultation and planning for mare owners, stallion owners, breeders, and foaling operations. We also frequently hear from clients who want help better understanding their veterinarian’s recommendations or how those recommendations fit into the bigger picture. With so many timelines, medications, and management decisions involved in reproduction, it's normal to have lots of questions along the way.

Our goal is never to replace your veterinarian, but rather to help bridge the gap between veterinary care and day-to-day reproductive decision-making. This is especially true when reproductive veterinary services may be limited in your area. Through practical guidance, education, and individualized planning, we can help you better understand the process, communicate effectively with your veterinary team, and approach breeding and foaling with greater confidence.

Dr. Bass has successfully worked with clients and their broodmares, stallions, and foals through many stages of the reproductive process: from developing a breeding plan and preparing for breeding season to stallion collection training and foaling preparation.

Consultations are tailored to what you (and your horse) need.

Some common consultation requests Dr. Bass regularly helps clients with include:

  • Understanding where their mare is in the breeding cycle and what the veterinarian’s ultrasound findings mean.

  • Talking through breeding options, including fresh, cooled, or frozen semen, and what each may involve.

  • Helping coordinate breeding plans and timing with veterinarians, stallion stations, and semen-shipping facilities.

  • Discussing reproductive medications a veterinarian has prescribed and helping clients understand their purpose within the breeding plan.

  • Selecting an appropriate stallion for a mare based on the client’s breeding goals.

  • Developing an individualized management plan for a breeding stallion.

  • Preparing a farm and foaling area for an approaching due date.

  • Selecting appropriate foaling supplies and developing practical foaling protocols.

  • Addressing what to expect before, during, and after foaling, as well as how to recognize two major foaling emergencies.

  • Handling and turning foal and dam out for the first time.

  • Walking through pros/cons of various weaning options.
